I chose to use a dot because that is what "netstat" uses in its output,
at least on Solaris. I cannot remember whether I checked on any other
operating systems. I've just looked at RedHat Linux, and I see that it
uses a colon, which is going to be a disaster for IPv6.

Colon will be a disaster for IPv6. A dot is not, as far as I can see,
ambiguous either for IPv4 or IPv6.
