Hi. I am not trying really to do anything at the moment. Just thinking. I
am developing a new email system for Shire.Net (email and web providers, no
dialups or shell users). It is based on LDAP and Exim and
courier-imap/pop3 and maybe courier webmail, and Frontbase database
(
www.frontbase.com) and the administration is Java servlets (and maybe JSP)
and the roxen GPL web server (
www.roxen.com). I have the mail delivery
working (some enhancements still need to be added) as well as the courier
stuff. I am now developing the Java servlets used to administer the LDAP
and Frontbase databases for each customer account. (Frontbase is used
backline only, not in mail delivery or pickup itself).
Currently I use exim and qpopper and uw-imap and "by hand" administration
and I am wanting to see how much I can streamline and automate and
tie-stuff together so that the administrative hassle and overhead is
lessened.
For example, we will host people's private domains that they have
registered, for email services. It would be nice to be able to have them
enter in their new domain name and have some backend stuff take that info
and automatically, perhaps pending approval or something, change the exim
and dns config files. Right now it is all done by hand and is an admin
overhead. Stuff like "local_domains" or "relay_domains" since we will
also sell bacup MX services. Obviously there is human interaction an
approval, but the actual maintenance of the configs would best be done
automatically once approved.
So I am just thinking about it all and how it is best to accomplish stuff
with as little machine overhead as possible balanced against human overhead.
