This is almost off-topic as I think it may be a DNS issue. However, I'd be
most grateful if anyone could help me with why our Exim is rejecting mail
from jiscmail.ac.uk (formerly mailbase.ac.uk).
I'm getting errors in the rejectlog that look like this:
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
2000-12-20 00:43:57 recipients from [130.246.192.49] refused (failed to
find host name from IP address)
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This is confusing because reverse lookups *seem* to work:
% dig -x 130.246.192.49
; <<>> DiG 8.2 <<>> -x
;; res options: init recurs defnam dnsrch
;; got answer:
;; ->>HEADER<<- opcode: QUERY, status: NOERROR, id: 4
;; flags: qr aa rd ra; QUERY: 1, ANSWER: 1, AUTHORITY: 6, ADDITIONAL: 6

BUT when doing a forward lookup:
=========================================================
% dig jiscmail.ac.uk.
; <<>> DiG 8.2 <<>> jiscmail.ac.uk.
;; res options: init recurs defnam dnsrch
;; got answer:

=========================================================
The only thing that I can see that might be wrong is that perhaps I should
be seeing an ANSWER SECTION that looks more like this, ie a second A
record for 130.246.192.49 like:
=========================================================
;; ANSWER SECTION:
jiscmail.ac.uk. 51m18s IN A 130.246.192.48
jiscmail.ac.uk. 51m18s IN A 130.246.192.49
=========================================================
Is Exim correct in its rejection? Am I doing something daft?
Thanks.
