[Exim] compile errors?

Is there a FAQ for getting through the installation somewhere? Even after
turning off features such as PAM and the monitor I'm getting compile-time
errors like:

smtp_in.o: In function `smtp_start_session': smtp_in.o(.text+0x159b):
undefined reference to `hosts_ctl' collect2: ld returned 1 exit status
make[1]: *** [exim] Error 1 make[1]: Leaving directory
`/root/working/exim-3.20/build-Linux-i386'
make: *** [go] Error 2
