Well, since (if I'm not mistaken) what's in the banner is usually what's
given in HELO/EHLO commands, it really must be an FQDN since there is a
hard and fast requirement that the name given in the greeting command be
the mailer's canonical hostname (i.e. a hostname that returns an A
record which give an address matching the source address for the
connection it opened).
