If you need IMAP, check out the Courier IMAP package.

It works from Maildir directories so it works fine with Exim. It has
many different ways to authenticate, PAM, most DBMs, LDAP, MySQL and
others, and the authentication is done from a daemon which caches
replies.
Only caveat it that there are some IMAP clients that don't follow the
IMAP rfc 100% that can have problems with Courier.
