Do you perhaps have Fetchmail installed as well?

Fetchmail was producing so many zombie offspring in a setup similar to yours,
that the box would accept no more processes after a while and had to be
rebooted. Fetchmail was replaced with the Getmail Python script (highly
recommended) and no more zombies.
