Thanks to Patrick Boutilier and Peter Radcliffe. The group was the problem. Mailman 2.0 uses mail as the default group.

What version of mailman?
I had a simiilar problem because I was usimg mailman/mailman for userid/group in the exim configure file and the 2.0 beta version uses group mail by default.
