The UW pop and imap server does NOT HAVE TO use mbox. Its developers
constantly advise against using mbox for exactly the reason you mention
(and a few more).
UW pop/imap offers a very wide choice (but appearently not maildir) of
mailbox formats. From MH to mbx to tenex to mbox. You choose which one
you use. There maybe problems with UW imap, but if you happen to choose
mbox, don't blame UW for that.
