This is (in general) sound advice, but it falls down when the smarthost
gets blacklisted. :(
My preferred approach is for my dialup box to send direct with a short
timeout; if the message can't be delivered quickly at the first attempt
then it's passed on to the smarthost. This seems to be a decent
compromise.
