Actually only the length restriction. Inside the DNS, names are stored
as <length><chars> for each component, with a length of zero indicating
the end (i.e. a null component). The use of a '.' to separate the
components when displaying them is purely a convention. I see no
restriction on the use of '.' within a component *at that level*.
