Yes.

Easy enough. Get and install Debian GNU/Linux from
http://www.debian.org.
A reasonable version of Exim is installed by default. Twiddle with
/etc/exim.conf (read the documentation first!).
Put the box up on the network. Test to see how it routes and directs mail,
and then set its MX record lower than that of the machine you're replacing.
When you feel that the new machine is doing its job correctly, just shut down
the other one and elimintate the MX records for it.
If you want it to be a mail hub and send to all the different cc mail and
exchange boxen, it might be desireable to know where the different users are.
You will, of course, need to know their hostnames at the very least. If you
expect people to write your users as foo@??? when the associated
mailstore is actually m$exchageserver.yourdomain.com.id, you will _have_ to know
where to find your users-- perhaps a database is what you need, hopefully _not_
/etc/aliases.
On a side note, ldap would be a good way to integrate the mail hub and get
rid of the proprietary systems alltogether, though that would take a while.

I don't know netscape messaging server, really. I think you may be talking about
two different things. Exim does not act as a POP or IMAP server; it just transfers
mail like a traditional MTA.

Hmmm. Actually, one peice of advice that has really kept me above water
starting out as an admin has been that things take time & that patience is
not just a virtue, but mandatory. Spend a week reading the Exim spec, then
another week learning how to install Debian. It will save you time in the long
run. Whatever you do, don't panic, and don't write messages to mailing lists
or Usenet newsgroups IN ALL CAPITAL LETTERS.
