We would like to use exim in conjunction with the Cyrus imap server to
provide a campus-wide mail server. One problem is that the upcoming version
of Cyrus uses LMTP as its delivery protocol. LMTP is supported by e.g.
sendmail and postfix but not at present by exim. It should still be possible
to use Cyrus's "deliver" program to interface with exim but this is not
ideal (incurs a performance penalty and it is harder to provide vacation and
forwarding functionality). I think the situation may be similar for at least
one commercial imap server - the M-Store product from MessagingDirect,
currently available to UK academia through a Chest deal.
Are there plans to implement LMTP in exim in the near future? (I know it is
already on the wishlist!).
Regards, John.
