We're running a mysql server for mail, apache, and ftp on a single server.
10,000 domains, 114,000 users, each of which can have up to 6 pop accounts.
It's always been very reliable. LDAP on the other hand is great for getting
single results from a large db, but something worth considering is that getting
a large result set with a query from LDAP is (and I quote from Netscape) "not
advised". You may not need to run a query of that type, but if you do, stay
well away from LDAP.

If you're worried about mysql, try looking at postgresql - I've switched all
my new developments to that out of preference (7.x is just released, but for
production systems I'd go for 6.5.x, since for example the DBD::Pg module won't
work with the new version)
