That is odd. I have just set split_spool_directory on my testing
version, and files ended up with user and group "exim", so I'm not sure
how to diagnose this further.

My settings are
EXIM_GID=42
EXIM_UID=42 #comment
SPOOL_DIRECTORY=/var/spool/exim
SPOOL_MODE=0640
Has anybody else has this problem?
