True. But sometimes people travel with their own (psesumably not
comprpmised) laptops and just connect them to the Net (via
Ethernet or modem) from anywhere. Or use machines owned by their
friends whom they trust. In these cases, ssh is much better than
telnet.

And if the local machine is compromised, it doesn't really matter
whether you use ssh or http+ssl.
