Author: Liam Healy Date: To: exim-users Subject: [Exim] "SMTP connection from mail lost" on some incoming mail
Exim 2.05 on Debian 2.1r2
Most mail is received successfully without trouble. However, some
mail never arrives despite repeated attempts from the sending host.
In the exim mainlog, there are entries like this:
2000-03-08 13:43:48 SMTP connection from mail
2000-03-08 13:43:48 SMTP connection from mail lost
sometimes there is an IP number:
2000-03-08 16:34:01 SMTP connection from [208.219.132.171]
2000-03-08 16:34:01 SMTP connection from [208.219.132.171] lost
and sometimes a name
2000-03-08 12:00:52 SMTP connection from smtp03.mrf.mail.rcn.net [207.172.4.62]
2000-03-08 12:00:52 SMTP connection from smtp03.mrf.mail.rcn.net [207.172.4.62] lost
The perro tcp log indicates that the failing connections are coming
from one of two hosts. Mail coming from anywhere else arrives just
fine. I have exim logging level set very high; mail that arrives
successfully causes literally dozens and dozens of lines in the log.
With this "connection lost" however, all I ever get are these two
lines. There is nothing in paniclog or rejectlog. I am at a total
loss. How do I debug?
