[Exim] Error : unexpected disconnection while reading SMTP c…

I am running Exim 2.12 on SunOS 4.1.1. It periodically chooses one of the PCs
on the local LAN and refuses to send messages by SMTP for the email client,
either Microsoft Outlook 97 or Outlook Express. The message in the log
file is

    unexpected disconnection while reading SMTP command from <name> [<IP>]

After a few reboots of the PC the problem usually goes away.

Has anyone any idea of the cause and if there is a solution ?
