i use remote_max_parallel = 40, on a Linux AMD K6-166 with lots and lots of
RAM, with excellent performance and no apparent downsides.

i completely agree. bulk_mailer was a necessary evil with sendmail, and
accomplishes nothing useful with exim. i got rid of bulk_mailer a long time
ago.
