This will mean that the /etc/services file is shot (depending on your 
version of Unix  - you should give more information in a problem report 
- services *might* be elsewhere, held under NIS/NIS+ etc).  You need 
line of the form
  smtp            25/tcp          mail
in your /etc/services file on a standard Unix varient.
