Planet is hosting freeserve (as you might be aware off) and we are using
exim without any major problems. We host 2 million users, so about 10
million emails a day -- or something like that ;>
All minor problems and bugs were always solved by Phil in less than 24
hours making it one of the fastest response to problems I know off.
Exim configuration has a LOT of options and it is well worth
experimenting with different settings to see how it can improve your
performances. For example, it is not worth to run more than one queue
runner every 10 minutes -- disk IO being the limiting factor.
Exim is limited by disk IO, so make sure that you have as little of it
as possible.
All in all, I have found exim to be the best MTA for the job.
