I like to say "most preferred" host, because the lowest preference
value is the highest preference, which is begging for confusion...

Hm, that's odd. It does seem to happen for me- I sometimes see a whole
list of "connection refused" messages followed by a completed send to
a backup MX... e.g. here's someone trying to write to
someone@???:

Hm, looks like retries on that message are much more cautious about
attempting to deliver the message.
