Then you didn't look hard enough. Look harder at:
http://www.exim.org/exim-html-3.00/doc/html/spec_6.html#SEC135
and pay particular attention to the paragraph that begins ``If `*' is
added to a single-key lookup type ...'' and the paragraph that follows
it.
(While the website documents are for version 3.0x of exim, this
particular feature has not changed significantly betwen 2.1x and 3.0x.)
