I think I have found the cause of the problem. On an internal mailing
list we have been told that a problem with the DMU nameserver meant that:
"mail from Faculty networks to users outside CSE was being bounced as
undeliverable between 14:30 and 15:55 on Tuesday 19/10/99."

We are within CSE (Computer Science and Engineering). So I think the
problem may well be sorted out now. I will keep an eye on it. OK, the
timestamps don't agree, but... Thank you to all those who helped.

I am still a little puzzled as to why I should need to check further back
towards the sender when I am using macondo as a mail hub for incoming and
outgoing mail, since the -d9 -bh output seems to be satisfied when it can
find macondo, (see earlier posting). Also the error message in the reject
log was (<<...>> marks my emphasis):

> 1999-10-19 14:00:18 11dYsA-0002zv-00 <<rejected from
> macondo.dmu.ac.uk [146.227.1.4]>> : cannot route to sender
> <#######@lancaster.ac.uk>

Philip's crafting of messages is usually very clear, so I would suspect
the problem does lie at macondo (DNS shot to bits?), rather than further
along. When he returns I will ask if he might add some reason (why can it
not route?) to this message. If I am "being thick" here, and just not
getting this, I would welcome further clarification as to why I should be
looking further afield, but I suggest it go off list. If people do respond
with more info, then if others want me to summarise I will be happy to do
so.

Thank you again for being so helpful and responsive,
