I am attempting to install exim on FreeBSD and am having a problem after
I alias mail & smtp IPs to my main IP. The compile & install was no problem.
When my machine has it's own unique IP exim runs as expected.
the machine IP: 209.53.238.11 mailb.qcislands.net
after I alias
209.53.238.6 mail.qcislands.net and
209.53.238.7 smtp.qcislands.net
to it, exim neither receives smtp traffic nor can it dispatch. I can telnet/
rlogin into both mail & smtp (and mailb) so I know the interface is working
fine. My reverse DNS resolves fine.
I do not get a panic.log. In an outbound attempt, exim simply tries all
possible MX's for the recipient but they all time-out.
an example main.log entry for email destined to xxxx@???:
1999-08-13 00:40:13 11FBvV-00003b-00 mail.island.net [199.60.19.4]: Operation timed out
1999-08-13 00:41:28 11FBvV-00003b-00 cliff.island.net [199.60.19.15]: Operation timed out
1999-08-13 00:42:43 11FBvV-00003b-00 nanaimo.island.net [199.60.19.1]: Operation timed out
1999-08-13 00:42:43 11FBvV-00003b-00 == xxxx@??? T=remote_smtp defer (60):Operation timed out
------
my configure file after the alias looks like:
LOCAL_INTERFACES = 209.53.238.11:209.53.238.6:209.53.238.7
OUTBOUND_INTERFACE = 209.53.238.6
primary_hostname = mail.qcislands.net
------
If I change OUTBOUND_INTERFACE to .11 and HUP, outbound works but incoming
still does not.
keep in mind however that I can telnet in fine to .6, .7 OR .11.
------
Can someone offer a way to confirm what "might" be happening?
many thanks IA
