If you can use maildir format for your maildrops then the standard
qmail pop3d will work anywhere.... the directory and authentication is
done by another program checkpassword - this program is small, easy to
understand, and easy to make do whatever you want.
If you need mbox format then cucipop has a modular authentication
scheme which makes the handling of an additional authentication scheme,
along with mailbox selection, reasonably easy.
Neither of these pieces of software is fully free in the GPL sense.
