Hrm.,. possibly a temporary DNS failure?

what happens when you try exim -bs -d11
and issue "HELO <whatevers appropriate>"
"MAIL FROM: <dchill@???>"
"RCPT TO: <as desired>"
"DATA"
<remainder of message>
.

The -d11 should show you whats going on, including DNS queries
