I still think removing the MX/A records from the DNS is the best
solution, if the domain is officialy defunct. If you want a time period
of giving notice of the change to senders, then using autoreply for
some time first might be good, but after notification period is over,
just completely remove the DNS records and mail will not be delivered
or accepted. (And if the sender-MTA is really smart, (ala exim), it
wont accept mail for that address from end-users in the first place)
