I'm a bit confused. Are these the same mailbox? Most imap server suites
give both an imap and a pop3 server for the same mailbox. (I know that
the U. Washington (pine) one does). And for using the U Washington
imap/pop3 server, the modifications that were made locally to exim or its
configurations were:

no modifications whatsoever

Because different server systems can use different mailbox formats, if you
want to use a mailbox format which is not directly supported by exim, then
you need to set up your local delivery to call the delivery agent that
comes with your imap server. An example of this for the cyrus imap server
is provided in the exim docs.

I should point out that if a user is going to be using pop3 some of the
time and imap some of the time, then unless they are very very careful and
know what they are doing, they are very likely to misplace mail.

Offering both IMAP and POP3 is fine (we do it), but individual users
should stick to one or the other. Also, beware of clients that do IMAP
in a POPish manner.
