Section 6.1 of the Exim spec (Single-key lookup types) contains this:
If `*' is added to a single-key lookup type (for example, `lsearch*'),
then if the initial lookup fails, the key `*' is looked up in the file
to provide a default value. See also the section on partial matching
below.
You can specify the lookup type of an aliasfile director with a
"search_type" option.
