I am running a large system with 100.000 users by the end of the month and
I use LDAP to store the user and most of the domain data. Specifically, I
use Linux (still 2.0.35 but migrating towards 2.2), Exim 2.12, the latest
OpenLDAP Release and glibc. This setup has proven to work reliable and
I am confident that it scales up to a much larger user base.

Exim is a good mailer for this purpose, because its flexible structure
with directors and routers allows to build customised architectures,
e.g. separate input queues, output queues and mailbox servers.
That architecture works well for us and some other large ISPs, but
depending on your situation, a different architecture may be interesting.
