Ok, mail directory on NFS. Add the following option to your
appendfile transport:
no_use_fcntl_lock
Usually, you can't do flock(2)/fcntl(2) via NFS (unless lockd (or
something) runs).

That's because, well, pipes don't do file locking, but real
appendfile does.
