I've had to stall on the migration from smail to exim at work due to the
following error...

The server that hosts /var/spool/mail is a solaris 2.5 box and the mail
exchangers are Linux (kernel: 2.2.2, distribution: Debian GNU/Linux 2.1).
I'm at a loss as to what would be the cause. It happened consistently
for all users. The only mail that was delivered was one user that filters
with procmail. When I reverted back to smail things resumed normally.
