Cyrus is an IMAP and POP server that works in "black-box" mode. You take an
incoming message and pipe to the cyrus's deliver program, which writes the
message into cyrus's mailstore. How it stores the messages is no concern of
the user. It then provides an IMAP and POP interface for people to read
their email. You can use it on a system without creating users in
/etc/passwd (I think). Cyrus's mailstore is quite fast, and allows
concurrent reads/writes. I hope this helps. I haven't really used Cyrus, so
I don't know too much more about it. Anyone: feel free to correct my
description.
