Tradition, bah humbug. He was "non-traditional" to say the least. What I
have works and is not too much of a pain for me, but in the "hit by a
truck" scenario, the person who comes in after me might not understand why
I did what I did (I know I should document it, that's my problem). It
could be easier since even I, the master of my scheme, occasionally screw
up...

Just because "tradition" says so, doesn't make it right, nor is what he did
"wrong". (I'm about to put my foot in my mouth so get ready :-).
"Tradition" (but not RFC's) also would have most users believe that
bbowler, BBowler and BBOWLER are all the same person and that the mail
system should know that.

Why, deliver it to me of course :-)

As I stated at the top of my original note, I'm not a Unix system
programming guru or even a wiz-in-training so I don't have a good feel for
how to implement it but what Chad says makes sense as a start as does,
perhaps, an option to either use getpwent or a "user (or PH) supplied"
serial read thru passwd routine that does a "truly caseless match" (with
the caveat that it'll slow things down, perhaps even name the option
"slow_caseless_match".
