My approach would be to hack exim as to treat incoming mail from the
backup MX as if it came from the host that delivered the message to
the backup MX. It's a hack since you can't do reverse DNS on that host
at that moment, but if the backup MX creates sane, informative and
trustable Received:-Headers, this could be done in a system filter.

When I finally get through to doing it, I will share the experiences.
