Err, I am using apache1.3 as my model.

./configure --help
[long LONG list of options]

That gives you your option list, and it doesn't ask any interactive
questions...

As for exams - whilst I agree, it should be noted that for the most
part we are answering papers that we've seen dozens of times before...
(to stretch the analogy further)
