I've just tried a configuration with
MDOM = pir.net
local_domains = "@:MDOM:rhubarb"
in it, and the simpler test
exim -bP local_domains
gives
local_domains = @:pir.net:rhubarb
You did put the definition of the macro before its use, I hope?
