Hello Phil,
the advantages are huge. Not only is Exim pretty secure, it is flexible, it
plugs straight into the place that sendmail had, it has outstanding
documentation (as I have found out), and a great userbase (us, this list).
I prefer Exim because it is so easy to set up anti-spam rules, relaying,
and virtual domains, without having to go read the Bat book.
You cannot go wrong with Exim, that is for sure.
