} What I actually did when I tested this was to observe that Malcolm's

} hand and screwed the results into my Local/Makefile, as suggested in the

The Makefile is already pretty heavily preprocessed. Could the support
scripts do the evaluation and nail it into the generated Makefile??
[Which then means that you are depending on the shell - but I hope that
can be depended on for a simple evaluation....]
