The empty group convention seems quite popular as a way to avoid the
requirement to actually put an address in the To: field of messages
like the one below.

This seems to have started producing the error message below,
following an upgrade to my Exim.

A message that you sent contained one or more recipient addresses that were
incorrectly constructed:

Members and Friends of CUSFS:; (recipient list not shown): empty address

This address has been ignored. The other addresses in the message were
syntactically valid and have been passed on for an attempt at delivery.

C.U. SCIENCE FICTION SOCIETY and JOMSBORG THE NEW Missive 8 October 1998
______________________________________________________________________________
Welcome, or welcome back! A whole term's fascinating and entertaining
events lie before us.

As usual, details of forthcoming events come first, followed by
directions to venues and other useful information.
______________________________________________________________________________
Social meeting 8.30pm onwards, Thursday 8th October; New Hall Bar

A chance to meet old and new friends, and talk about science fiction,
fantasy and life in general, in a relaxed environment. We meet here
every week.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Squash and J. R. R. Tolkien discussion
8:30pm, Sunday 11th October; Junior Parlour, Trinity

"Lord of the Rings" has been voted Most Popular Book of the Century,
and Tolkien has had an undeniable and dramatic influence on the
genre. But does his son's editing and publication of Tolkien's drafts,
almost down to the laundry lists, add to our appreciation of his work?
Come along, listen and have your say.

Mead, soft drinks and biscuits will be provided.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Reading
8:30pm, Wednesday 14th October; Room 7, 16 Bateman St.

Bring along something that has moved or amused you, to read aloud - or
listen to other people's choices. (Please keep readings under 10
minutes.)
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Arthur C. Clarke discussion
8:30pm, Sunday 18th October; H2 New Court, Trinity

Clarke's works have introduced many people to the genre, and he is
perhaps best known for 2001 - or is he? Have "Mysterious World" and
recent collaborations blurred our view of the doyen of 'hard' SF?
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Video Showing
8:30pm, Wednesday 21st October; 6 Ainsworth Court

A film based on a short story by Kurt Vonnegut. More details next week.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Favourite Author discussion
8.30pm, Sunday 25th October; Room G/1, 73 Maid's Causeway

Come along and tell everyone about the best author(s) you have
encountered, or hear who they most like. A good opportunity to
discover excellent authors you may not have heard of.
_______________________________________________________________________________
Later This Term
Video showings and readings continue to alternate on Wednesdays, with
discussions on Sundays.

Wednesday 28th October - Turkey Reading
For those stories too dreadful to ignore. "The Eye of Argon" may make
a repeat appearance...

Sunday 1st November - Cyberpunk discussion

Sunday 8th November - Games evening
To help drive away those mid-term blues, bring along your favourite
multi-player game, or just have a go at someone else's.

Wednesday 11th November - Storytelling
We start with a theme or an introduction, and everybody present can
contribute to the story before it draws to a close.

Sunday 15th November - David Gemmell discussion

Sunday 22nd November - Anne McCaffrey discussion

Sunday 29th November - Alan Garner discussion

We are also hopeful of organising a speaker meeting.

Directions
NB. Directions may change (especially if we've got things
wrong). Please check details for any event with the latest missive.

Junior Parlour, Trinity
This is in Whewell's Court, across Trinity Street from the Great Gate,
above Trinity Street Post Office. Entering Whewell's Court from
Trinity Street, ignore the first staircase and go into the first open
court. Turn right into the passageway, and go up the outside stairs
facing you. The Junior Parlour is at the far end of the corridor.

Room 7, 16 Bateman Street
It's near the Botanic Garden. Head for the Chemistry Department on
Lensfield Road. Walk down Panton Street (to the right of the Chemistry
Department) to the end and turn left onto Bateman Street. Walk along for
about 100 yards and you'll reach no.16. Use the buzzer for room 7.

H2, New Court, Trinity
Entering the main site through the main gates, head for the far left
corner. Go through the corridor and turn right, going through the
archway. H staircase is on the left-hand side of the courtyard, straight
ahead when you have turned left, second on the left.

Room G/1, 73 Maid's Causeway
Head along Jesus Lane to the roundabout (Four Lamps). Go straight
across, into Maid's Causeway. No. 73 is a little way up the
hill. Please use the buzzer.

6 Ainsworth Court
>From the University Arms Hotel on Regent Street, cross Parker's Piece

to the opposite corner, and bear right into Mill Road. At the White
Swan pub, turn left into Kingston Street. At the end, turn right into
Hooper Street, then left into Ainsworth Street. A couple of hundred
yards along, turn left into Ainsworth Court, a cul-de-sac. No. 6
should be facing you ahead.

Social meetings

CUSFS meets in New Hall bar on Thursday evenings in term, starting at
about 8:30pm. This includes the CUSFS raffle of duplicate books, which
funds parties and the like. Books for upcoming discussions will be
brought from the library to the meetings to enable them to be borrowed
before they're discussed.

New Hall is on Huntingdon Road. To get to the bar, go in past the
porters lodge and then turn left. The second door on the right is to
the JCR. The bar can be reached by going down stairs from the JCR.

Outside term, or if New Hall bar is occupied, we meet in the County
Arms, also on Huntingdon Road. You pass it on your left going from the
centre of town, over Magdalene Bridge, to New Hall.

CUSFS Library

The library is available for borrowing. Please see the Librarian at
any event - he should have a copy of the catalogue with
him. Alternatively e-mail your requests, including which event you
want to collect them at, to <soc-cusfs-library@???>.

The library list on the web page (see below) is now fairly up-to-date.
Details of opening hours should be available soon. Outside full term
the library will not open, though it may still be possible to request
books and collect them at meetings.

We would like to appoint sub-librarians, so we can open the library
more often. It's not difficult, nor more time consuming than you
want. Essentially you just have to be available for a couple of hours,
to unlock and lock up, and issue books. If you think you can help,
please contact the Librarian, either at meetings or via e-mail.

TTBA - The Society Magazine

"Try Tony Blair's Amphetamines" has now been printed, and will be
distributed soon. Come along to events to collect your copy, or wait
for it to arrive.

Articles are required for the next TTBA. Reviews (either of things
new or things classic), short stories and anything else related to SF
and fantasy will be gratefully received. Contact the Editor at events,
or send your submissions to <soc-cusfs-ttba@???>. We
expect to have another issue out this term.
______________________________________________________________________________
Writers' Workshops

Writers of any level of experience can submit their work for
constructive criticism by other writers and readers. We expect to run
at least one workshop this term, so please let the committee know if
you have anything you would like discussed.
______________________________________________________________________________
TTBA On The Box

We are currently working on several SF-based short films. If you are
interested in acting, script-writing, camera work, editing or other
aspect of film-making, please get in touch with the committee.

The Society Web Page

This is to be found at <http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/cusfs/> The
web page includes the library list, the constitution, information on
past TTBAs and various other interesting things. There is also a list
of some links we think you might like.
