as far as I know that primarily depends on your OS. If I remember right,
with 2.51 or 2.6 Sun introduced a different (much faster) technique to
access /etc/passwd (or it's shadow) than they did use before.
I don't know of any other OS, not even my own (HP-UX 10.20). The only
thing that's known to me is that one needs a patch for UIDs bigger than
2^16 :)
