hi folks -

another simple mail configuration problem you may care to look at -

I'm mailing a person on a standard college mail account
(firstname.secondname@???), but it bounces it because my "FROM" address
is different to the hostname it receives it from. Mail is currently routing via
a machine (physig) running exim.

First case: 'mail pooh@physig' : exim uses /etc/aliases to redirect to
mail.kcl.ac.uk

> host mail.kcl.ac.uk [137.73.66.6]:
> 571 <jo@???>... access denied, unauthorized hostname in
> FROM address <jo@???>. Client [137.73.4.67] must use
> <physig.ph.kcl.ac.uk>
>

second case: 'mail chanjira.sinthanayothin@???' :

> A message that you sent could not be delivered to all of its recipients. The
> following address(es) failed:
>
> @physig.ph.kcl.ac.uk:chanjira.sinthanayothin@???:
> SMTP error from remote mailer after MAIL FROM:
> <jo@???> SIZE=1652:
> host mail.kcl.ac.uk [137.73.66.6]:
> 571 <jo@???>... access denied, unauthorized hostname in
> FROM address <jo@???>. Client [137.73.4.67] must use
> <physig.ph.kcl.ac.uk>

I was thinking of getting exim to replace the hostname in the FROM field for a
specified domain, but not sure if this is possible or desirable. any help for a
exim/SMTP newbie greatly appreciated.

cheers then,

james
