[EXIM] Ultrix and EXIM

Has anyone build Exim-1.92 under Ultrix (I'm using 4.5 but that
shouldn't matter). So far, I've begun the fight with Ultrix's shell
which gives me the following every time I type "make"

ecf-guest.mit.edu% make
sh: bad substitution
*** Error code 1

Stop.

I'll keep pawing through with variations on sh but I was hoping that
someone could give me a clue.
