On two servers of ours (Exim 1.82 on FreeBSD 2.2.6, and Exim 1.92 on
FreeBSD 2.2), Exim is logging a significant number of errors
receiving mail from hotmail.com, e.g.:
1998-06-07 18:24:31 f91.hotmail.com (hotmail.com) [207.82.250.197]
unexpected disconnection while reading data
This happens with a couple of other sites, such as these, logged with
disconnections while reading the header (rather than data). The other
20,000 or so email messages received weekly don't have any problems.
1998-06-06 05:12:19 relay4.delivere.com (relay.delivere.com)
[209.38.156.23] unexpected disconnection
1998-06-07 14:51:16 grynet.passagen.se [194.17.55.99] unexpected
disconnection while reading header
1998-06-07 14:57:36 pm04sm.pmm.mci.net [208.159.126.153] unexpected
disconnection while reading header
1998-06-07 15:30:16 grynet.passagen.se [194.17.55.99] unexpected
disconnection while reading header
1998-06-07 16:01:26 grynet.passagen.se [194.17.55.99] unexpected
disconnection while reading header
1998-06-07 16:32:06 grynet.passagen.se [194.17.55.99] unexpected
disconnection while reading header
1998-06-07 18:28:48 pm02sm.pmm.mci.net [208.159.126.151] unexpected
disconnection while reading header
There are also persistent errors like:
1998-06-06 06:44:26 0yiAN8-00077U-00 SMTP incoming data timeout
(message abandoned) while connected to library.ummed.edu
[146.189.64.2]
There seems to be some pattern in that it looks like hotmail.com is
running ZMail, mci.net is running PMDF, delivere.com and
library.ummedu.edu are running QMail, which suggests that the problem
may be MTA related (although passagen.se seems to be running Sendmail
8.8.6/8.8.6.
Inbetween the errors, some mail is received and sent to hotmail.com
and the other problem sites.
Can anyone advise where the problem is likely to be?
Regards
Stephen
