Hello,
I am preparing a (german) survey concerning three issues:
- Current use of ESMTP-features (somewhat like D.J. Bernstein did
a year ago)
- Current distribution of Mailers
- Current results to relay attempts without an actual message
transfered.
My approach is somewhat different from D.J.'s:
- One approach is checking all the mailservers we deliver mail to.
By weightening the results with the number of mails, a more realistic
analysis of effects might take place (although we have, of
cause, a specific customer pattern).
- The other approach is:
I took the .de-Zone and checked all the lowest MXes for each
domain. Multiple references to the same host count multiple.
This is what I found:
- de-Domain with a working MTA behind: 109 300
- No. of different host(names) in the MX-records: 28 804
- Number of Domains with Exim behind: 14 553
- Number of different host(names) with Exim: 216
This is heavily influnced by the fact, that the AFAIK biggest german
WWW-Presence-Provider (Schlund & Partner) uses Exim on his servers.
I counted all systems greeting with 'Exim' or answering with the
old (buggy) 'Supported functions are:'-line to an EHLO.
Sorry, but I just finished the data collection, so please don't
ask any other questions concerning the results.
Greetings,
Georg
