Shouldn't need to. What goes wrong? I can build that OK:

xoanon$ cat zz
customer1.co.uk:
customer2.co.uk:
customer3.co.uk:
xoanon$ exim_dbmbuild zz zzz
3 entries written
xoanon$

... and I can look up things in it:

${lookup{customer1.co.uk}dbm{/home/ph10/tmp/zzz}{>$value<}{fail}}

What DBM library are you using? I tested with DB 1.85.
