We Debian developers tend to say such things...
Nevermind. I'm not sitting in front of my Linux box, but I telnetted
to master.debian.org and found the following for you:
debian:~/ftp/hamm> grep bin/mail Contents-i386
usr/bin/mail mail/mailx
So just install the package mailx. It works nice with exim and any
other mailer daemon.
