I told a lie when I replied to this this (Monday :-) morning. I hadn't
twigged that John had said "reject log". The To: is not a header line;
it simply lists all previously accepted valid recipients. So this
message had been transmitted using the commands
RCPT TO:<santa@???>
RCPT TO:<23>
when the error occurred. The line is stupidly ambigious. How could I
ever have done such a silly thing like that? I will change it to say
"Recipients" instead of "To".
