Had some fun last night ..
I'd somehow managed to leave mainlog owned by root, and exim couldn't write to
it ...
This was what happened after the data ...
354 Enter message, ending with "." on a line by itself

1997-09-25 12:44:47 0xECLe-0000xe-00 Cannot open main log file
"/usr/exim/spool/log/mainlog": Permission denied
421 Unexpected failure, please try later
Sendmail got a little bit confused by receiving a 1997 return code, and barfed
horribly.
10,000 bounce messages later things started to calm down a bit (ie we noticed).
The firewall (sendmail) was full of messages saying 554 protocol error.
Should exim really be logging to the socket in such a fashion?
